Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo Announces New Solo LP

BY Alex HudsonPublished Nov 10, 2011

We still don't know what the status of Sonic Youth following the breakup of indie rock''s first couple, Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, but the band's co-founder Lee Ranaldo has just announced his latest solo LP. Entitled Between the Times & the Tides, it's due out on March 20 through Matador Records.

The album features guest appearances from Wilco's Nels Cline, Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley, prior Sonic Youth collaborators Bob Bert and Jim O'Rourke, plus jazz boundary-pushers Alan Licht and John Medesk, as well as bassist Irwin Menkin.

So what exactly did Ranaldo and his collaborators come up with? According to a rather vague announcement from the label, "The album is equal parts smart, confident and loose in a manner that recalls some of our favourite rock'n'roll projects... yet sounds like a fantastic new band that was apparently being assembled right under our noses."

Expect 2012 tour dates to be announced soon, and look for an album pre-order to pop up on Matador's website in the near future.
