Solange released A Seat at the Table back in 2016, and she's just revealed a few details about her follow-up album.
In a profile for T: The New York Times Style Magazine, Solange let us know that she's putting the finishing touches on her next record, and that it will land this fall — "probably sometime soon."
The new songs were recorded between New Orleans, Jamaica, California and "a kind of Houston of the mind."
"There is a lot of jazz at the core," Solange told T. "But with electronic and hip-hop drum and bass because I want it to bang and make your trunk rattle."
She also opened up about her creative process, noting that many of the songs on A Seat at the Table were initially 15-minute pieces or longer, but that they were trimmed to three or four in the final stages of production. She's implementing the same strategy on the upcoming album.
"I like to be able to tell the story in 13 different ways, then I like to edit," she said.
Solange also cited a wide range of artists as her inspirations across multiple mediums — from Joni Mitchell's passion for both music and painting, Missy Elliott's groundbreaking music videos, and the sounds of Aaliyah, Sun Ra, Rotary Connection and Stevie Wonder.
There's no official release date or title for the new album yet, and we probably shouldn't expect too much info ahead of its release; as the interviewer puts it, "The record will likely arrive into the world fully formed at some mysterious and unexpected moment, like a meteor cratering into the culture."
