Soiled Mattress & the Springs "Tidal Wave"

Soiled Mattress & the Springs "Tidal Wave"
"Heroic” isn’t a word I use often in a musical context but it’s not every day you hear a band like Soiled Mattress & the Springs, who play freely without a care fuck in the world. What other bands out there attack music with such punkish ferocity but choose to sound like Spyro Gyra instead of Black Flag? From NYC – where else? – this keys, sax and drums trio don’t waste their time trying to fit into any sort of Gotham jazz consortium or resurrect an ironic new subgenre; instead, they spend their time throwing basement parties with No Age, Mika Miko, Japanther and Child Abuse. They have a full-length fittingly called Honk Honk Bonk! (released at the end of last year on Upset the Rhythm) under their belt, which features "Tidal Wave,” a rapturous romp that would feel right at home on the radio during a three a.m. taxi ride up the Bowery in ’83, complete with a breakdown that shows these guys aren’t into the "smooth jazz” that hovers over them. Punk as fuck.
