Snowblink Announce 'Returning Current' LP, Share New Single
Earlier this year, Snowblink debuted a new single called "How Now" for Outside Music. Now, the indie pop duo have followed that up with news of a forthcoming full-length for their new label home.
Titled Returning Current, the album will arrive on September 9 and marks the band's first LP since 2012's Inner Classics. A press release describes it as "an unflinching study of human relationship," exploring interactions with self and others, and the looming threat of losing what matters most across both a daytime-inspired and nighttime-inspired side.
Daniela Gesundheit and Dan Goldman kicked off the creative process behind their latest record by mapping out a "mood board" featuring themes and sensations like "Santa Fe," "Arizona," "Palm Springs" and "lots of space with bursts or ripples of sounds." Other musicians, producers and engineers were then invited to interpret these and transform them in to the music that appears on the record.
For the project, the duo enlisted an array of techniques — from at-home acoustic recordings to sample-based production methods in studio. Robbie Lackritz co-produced the album, while the list of guest musical contributors includes Leslie Feist, Owen Pallett, Barbara Gruska, Johnny Spence, Thom Gill, Ariel Engle, Steven Foster, Felicity Williams, Philipe Melanson and Mika Posen.
In addition to news of the impending album, the band have shared another single, "Feel Like a Man." The song is Gesundheit's response to the exhaustion of existing in a male-dominated career field.
"I wondered if other women felt similarly, that they had to figuratively and energetically be 'in drag' to get their voices heard," she explained. "I pictured myself as a man, feeling both the elation and intense frustration of being powerful. The lyrics are buoyed above a repetitive synth pattern and relentless groove — a kind of echo of foot soldiers going out each day to conquer based on orders from above without being entirely clear on what the war is all about."
You can hear the musical manifestation of that sentiment by listening to "Feel Like a Man" now. Just scroll past the Returning Current tracklisting and the band's upcoming tour dates to hit play.
