Smog Rain on Lens

The more I try to analyse the music of Bill Callahan, the more distant his allure. I just know that his music moves me both musically and lyrically. Callahan bridges that gap between a dark abyss and warm camaraderie, like a welcome friend always exposing the underbelly of his imagination. As with all of Smog's prolific output, his latest album is full of ideas stated in the simplest and most economical form, Rain On Lens being more economical than most. The compositions are stripped down, ragged, rocking and jarring, taking full advantage of new collaborator Rick Rizzo's slashing guitar might. Callahan is simply a unique talent, better heard than discussed. (Drag City)
