Smiths Tribute Album Gets Built to Spill's Doug Martsch, Vivian Girls' Katy Goodman, Tanya Donelly

It may not be as ambitious as Janice Whaley's upcoming six-disc, career-spanning tribute to the Smiths, but a new compilation is similarly set to toast the '80s English rockers.

Indie label American Laundromat Records will be issuing Please, Please, Please: A Tribute to the Smiths later this year, roping in more than a few notable artists taking on the mopey icons' music.

Though the tracklisting hasn't been finalized, Slicing Up Eyeballs reports that we can expect turns from Built to Spill's Doug Martsch, who will tackle "Reel Around the Fountain," as well as former Throwing Muses/Belly frontwoman Tanya Donelly, who recorded "Shoplifters of the World Unite." Both the Wedding Present and sister band Cinerama will also take a crack at Smiths classics, while Vivian Girls/La Sera leader Katy Goodman hasn't chosen her cover tune, but is primed to appear.

You can see the list of artists and cover songs below. That's the cover up above, and while a firm release date has yet to be finalized, the label says to expect the release in autumn 2011.
