After confirming back in the spring that a monolithic reissue of Smashing Pumpkins' 1998 album Adore was on the way, bandleader Billy Corgan has now unveiled all the details behind the expanded set, which arrives September 23 through Virgin/UMe.
A blog post on the group's website comes with mixed feelings. Corgan explains that he'd been eagerly awaiting sharing the info with fans, but called out Amazon for leaking the tracklising on its website before him. Following a series of tweets castigating the online shopping giant, he wrote, "I'm very upset that an online retailer broke their agreement, posting up the tracks up before we could do it here first AS THEY'D ASKED."
Nevertheless, Corgan has now delivered all of the info behind the set. Adore is set to reappear in a few different formats, including a single CD of the remastered studio LP, a double LP, and a 90-song digital package.
As previously reported, there is also a massive box set compiling six CDs' worth of material and a concert DVD. Adore Super Deluxe's first disc is the remastered stereo edition of Adore, while the second disc is a mono edition that axes "17" from the tracklisting.
Three discs of alternate versions are crammed into the box, with In a State of Passage containing demos recorded at Corgan's Sadlands studio. Chalices, Palaces and Deep Pools showcases outtakes including an instrumental version of "For Martha," while Malice, Callous and Fools features outtakes like Corgan's "Let Me Give the World to You" collaboration with Rick Rubin.
The punnily titled Kissed Alive Too collects era-appropriate concert recordings, while the tellingly titled Fox Theater, Atlanta, GA – August 4, 1998 concert DVD features a full live show. You'll find all of the info for Adore Super Deluxe down below.
While at the time the shift from the alt-rock bombast of 1995's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness to the more intimate folk and electronic influences showcased on Adore left many puzzled, Corgan said in a statement that fans eventually came around to appreciate the initially divisive LP.
"I love Adore, but for a while, my opinion of the record was so intertwined with people's reactions to it at the time," he explained, adding, "I would say that my kind of iffy feelings lingered long past the point when a lot of fans seemed to come back around to the record — which seemed to really start happening around seven years ago. Now Adore is name-checked by fans constantly."
As a reminder, in addition to the upcoming Adore reissue, fans can also look forward to the Smashing Pumpkins' in the works one-two punch of Monuments to an Elegy and Day for Night, as well as a re-release of 2000's Machina/The Machines of Gods arriving further down the pipeline.
