At the turn of the '70s, legendary funkateer Sly Stone launched a short-lived label called Stone Flower, which released just a handful of singles. The records were credited to various artists, but all of them were written and produced by Sly himself. This fall, the label's output is being collected with the compilation I'm Just Like You: Sly's Stone Flower 1969-70. The album is out today (September 30) digitally and on CD via Light in the Attic Records, while the vinyl version will follow on November 4.
A press release notes that this material found Sly heading in a different direction from the Family Stone's famed output. The songs are said to feature a "peculiar, minimal electro-funk sound," marked by lo-fi sonics and Maestro Rhythm King drum machine experimentation.
All of the label's singles have been remastered and appear here, along with 10 unreleased tracks from the archives. A press release promises, "In these grooves you'll find the missing link between the rocky, soulful Sly Stone of Stand! and the dark, drum machine-punctuated, overdubbed sound of There's a Riot Going On."
The release includes an interview with the man himself and liner notes from members of the Stone Flower family. Go here if you'd like to order a copy; vinyl editions come on purple, lime green or smokey grey wax. There are also packages that include a T-shirt or a screen-printed poster.
