Sleepwave

'Broken Compass' (album stream)

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Sep 8, 2014

After grinding it out for years with metalcore crew Underoath, vocalist Spencer Chamberlain is changing gears and focusing on his new, alt-rock tinged Sleepwave project. The outfit's debut LP Broken Compass is set to hit stores September 16 through Epitaph Records, but you can hear the whole album ahead of time right now on Exclaim.ca.

A press release notes that the album melds the "dirty dark side of electronica" with '90s alt rock, with touchstones including Muse, Soundgarden, Deftones, Nine Inch Nails and Smashing Pumpkins. We'd already heard grim guitar anthem "Through the Looking Glass," but now you can check out Chamberlain tossing his Filter-styled swirl of screaming and singing on the detuned metal drive of "The Wolf," the gothic piano-juiced "Inner Body Revolt," and the spacious and creepy closing title track.

"Hold Up My Head," meanwhile, adds symphonic strings and even more morose eighty-eights work behind the singer's dismissive cries ("every last one of them could choke for all I care").

You'll find all of the moody debut down below.

As previously reported, Sleepwave have already been showing the album off on tour, and you can see their remaining North American tour dates here.
