Sled Island Announces Poster Contest

Calgary’s Sled Island festival has announced the Create-a-Poster contest, a clever way to get high school students involved with the fest and at the same time teach them a thing or two about music promotion.

The organisers of the festival, which takes place from June 25 to 28, lay out the contest like this: "The object for high school students is to design a Sled Island poster that can include Sled Island performers and/or artists on the poster, and whatever images or ideas they have about the festival. The creators are encouraged to print out and put up their posters around schools, neighbourhoods, favourite coffee shop — wherever they want, within all applicable rules (school regulations, bylaws, etc).”

After putting up the poster, the students are then asked to take a picture of their creation and email it, along with their name, school, age and a contact number, to drew@sledisland.com. The top ten entries win a weekend pass to the fest and get their posters posted on the Sled Island website.

For poster inspiration, the students have festival artists such as Deerhunter, No Age, Of Montreal, RZA, Jonathan Richman and Mogwai, which should be more than enough to get those artistic juices flowing.

The contest closes June 6 and winners will be notified by email by June 13. For those who are not artistically inclined or simply too old or too lazy to participate, you can buy your festival passes and tickets at the Sled Island website.
