Published Sep 24, 2013Rootsy Toronto band Skydiggers have been celebrating their 25th anniversary with a string of releases. Following a live album and covers collection, they have announced the third release in the campaign. She Comes into the Room, which features some of the band's favourite female vocalists, is out on October 8.
The album finds the band re-imagining eight tracks from their back catalogue and recruiting some notable women to sing lead vocals. The singers include Margo Timmins of Cowboy Junkies, Oh Susanna, Saidah Baba Talibah, Damhnait Doyle, Angela Desveaux, Ivy Mairi, close Skydiggers associate Jessy Bell Smith, and Alejandra Ribera.
"We began to think about how exciting it would be to have a full album's worth of material sung by friends from our musical community," singer Andy Maize said in a statement. "We're lucky to know so many talented female vocalists. It was exciting for us to match these unique singers with songs that we had written over the past 25 years and hear them again for what seems like the first time."
See the tracklist below; note that the song "Weak Little Heart" is previously unreleased. Scroll past that to hear the Angela Desveaux-sung version of "This New Country," originally from 1997's Desmond's Hip City. Also below is a six-minute featurette about the making of She Comes into the Room.
The album is available to pre-order here. This will be followed later in 2013 by another 25th anniversary release: the seasonal EP Good King. Details for this holiday release will arrive in due course.
Skydiggers will play a 25th anniversary show at Toronto's Winter Garden Theatre on October 19. Tickets can be purchased here.
