Having released Undead less than a year ago, Florida death metal juggernaut Chris Barnes and company have already returned with its follow-up, and tenth Six Feet Under album, Unborn. Featuring a revamped line-up (with the addition of guitarist Ola Englund and bassist Jeff Hughell), Unborn picks up where excellent comeback Undead left off. With 11 songs in 35 minutes, Unborn is classic SFU, featuring heavy blasts and crushing, brutal grooves that are, of course, anchored by Barnes's iconic, vicious guttural vocals. However, guest guitarists and co-writers Jari Laine (Torture Killer), Ben Savage (Whitechapel) and Rob Arnold (ex-Chimaira) have added a modern twist to Six Feet Under's traditional death sound. Opening track "Neuro Osmosis" contains deathcore-esque, groove-filled riffs and mid-tempo melodic leads, while "Zombie Blood Curse" features fast blasts and catchy, chugging guitar work. But it's highlights "Prophecy" and "Alive to Kill You" that maintain SFU's straightforward, brutal sound, exhibiting the line-up's tight musicianship and cohesiveness. It's clear that Barnes still knows how to pick 'em.
