Published Jun 27, 2014Heading from cinema house speakers and onto your stereo, Vancouver soundscaper Sinoia Caves (a.k.a. Black Mountain synth wizard Jeremy Schmidt) is finally giving his score to beloved 2010 sci-fi flick Beyond the Black Rainbow a proper soundtrack release.
While there have been rumours of an official release for a few years now — and the score even made our list of Top 20 Most Anticipated Canadian Albums of 2014 — it was announced today (June 27) that Jagjaguwar is serving up the soundtrack for North American audiences September 2. Death Waltz, meanwhile, delivers the set in Europe and the UK the same day.
Schmidt's score to BC filmmaker Panos Cosmatos's sci-fi thriller revolving around the experiments of a new age research facility is described as "haunting, uncompromising [and] intense," with the synth-heavy pieces fitting in aesthetically with classic works from Tangerine Dream, Wendy Carlos and John Carpenter. While Death Waltz noted in a press release that its version of the LP will be packaged with an obi strip and be pressed on "clear vinyl with red smoke effect," Jagjaguwar's North American version will come on clear wax. If you're part of Death Waltz's subscription service, you will automatically get the record as part of your sub package.
The record will also feature liner notes from Schmidt, who designed the album art as well. As you can see above, it features an actual still from the film.
If in Europe, you can pre-order the release here at Death Waltz and grab the North American version here at Jagjaguwar.
Down below, you'll find a trailer for the film, as well as a stream of Schmidt's "Forever Dilating Eye."
