Sightlines / Crystal Swells

Split 7-inch

BY Josiah HughesPublished Mar 24, 2014

Next month, Vancouver punk acts Sightlines and Crystal Swells will join forces on a split 7-inch. Today, we get a song from each band.

On "Foreknowledge," Sightlines demonstrate all of their best qualities, from frontman Eric Axen's gentle vocals to the band's gruff, hard-hitting instrumentation. All in all, it sees the band finding a wonderful sweet spot somewhere between post-punk and pop punk.

With "Beach Bear," Crystal Swells make things even messier, offering up a grungey, scuzzy fist-pumper that adds in plenty of feedback and lo-fi tape muck. That said, it's melodic enough to compliment the Sightlines side nicely.

The final record will contain one more song per band, and will be released on peach-coloured vinyl on April 15 via the band's own "vanity labels" Alarum and TRBL FCKR. They'll celebrate with a show on April 18 at Vancouver's They Live Video. The release's cover, which can be viewed above, was created by Dana Kearley.

For now, check out "Foreknowledge" and "Beach Bear" below.
