Shonen Knife Announce Ramones Tribute Album

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jun 15, 2011

If you thought that after 30 years in the music biz, long-running Japanese pop rockers Shonen Knife might take a breather, guess again. The girls are back with yet another entry into their prolific catalogue. But while the last two years have seen the act release two albums-worth of original material (2009's Super Group and last year's Free Time), a newly announced album intends to pay tribute to one of the greatest punk bands of all time: the Ramones.

Titled Osaka Ramones: Tribute To The Ramones, the new set finds the energetic trio bashing out no less than 13 Ramones songs. While some of the obvious ones are there ("Blitzkrieg Bop", "Sheenah Is a Punk Rocker"), Shonen Knife manage to shine a light on a couple of rarer tunes (enter the C.J. Ramone-penned "Scattergun" off 1995's ¡Adiós Amigos!). All of them will no doubt be pepped-up as per the Osaka-bred band's usual m.o.

The band are no strangers to performing Ramones covers, mind you. A cover of "I Wanna Be Sedated" is included as a bonus track on some pressings of their 1983 album, Burning Farm. Continuing on with their 30th anniversary celebrations, Shonen Knife are expected to drop some more North American tour dates in the near future.

Osaka Ramones: Tribute To The Ramones comes out July 19 via Good Charamel Records.
