The Shangs

Longet

BY Liz WorthPublished Jan 28, 2008

Longet is like listening to a dream; it’s full of ethereal expressions and surreal minor keys. With a lineage that stretches back to the early and experimental days of Hamilton, ON cult legends Simply Saucer, the Shangs’ David Byers (vocals/guitars/flute/piano) provides hauntingly evocative vocals that carve intimate, poignant convictions. Though Byers and Ed O’Neill (guitars/glass harmonica/piano/keyboards/percussion) build sparse, understated arrangements, the impression that there are more than two people at work here doesn’t let up. Original and heartbreakingly honest, Longet wouldn’t be done justice with comparisons to other acts or works. It’s one of those rare finds that has the ability to get deep into the core of your psyche.
