Shabazz Palaces

'Black Up' (short film)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Dec 2, 2011

Seattle-based hip-hop duo Shabazz Palaces got attention for being one of the few hip-hop act to sign with their hometown's Sub Pop Records. Then they released their debut full-length Black Up earlier this year, garnering a ton of critical acclaim from all over the map. Now, you can watch a visual sampler of that same album.

The video clocks in at just under five minutes and features video footage courtesy of director Kahlil Joseph set to music clips off Black Up.

The video work includes appearances from the two guys that make up Shabazz Palaces, Tendai Maraire and Ishamael "Palaceer Lazaro" Butler, as well as some more elaborate shots of lush greenery and some animals. Past the halfway mark there's even a sort-of tribute to the late Gil Scott-Heron.
