'Serial' Podcast Returns with New Music from Nick Thorburn

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Dec 10, 2015

The surprisingly successful investigative podcast Serial unexpectedly delivered the first episode of its second season this morning (December 10). In addition to introducing listeners to an entirely new story, the This American Life spin-off also debuted some new theme music from Nick Thorburn.

The Unicorns and Islands musician composed the infectious theme song for Serial's first season and even delivered an entire soundtrack for the show last year. Now, he's returned with a different theme for an entirely different story.

"We wanted to change it because the theme the first year really belonged to that story," producer Julie Snyder told the New York Times.

This season hears host Sarah Koenig following the story of American soldier Bowe Bergdahl, who controversially walked off his post while serving in Afghanistan and was held captive by the Taliban for five years.

The first episode of Season 2 is available for streaming and download right now over here. The intro is embedded below. Thorburn's new theme song kicks in around the 3:00 mark. And don't worry — the new music is still saturated with plenty of plinking piano notes that are sure to worm their way into your brain and keep you totally engrossed in the story.

The intro's only for you, Facebook. Nice to see you again.
