Section 25 Retrofit

Section 25 Retrofit
Retrofit was always going to be a special album in the Section 25 discography. After all, it consists of some of their favourite songs, all re-recorded and re-imagined in a way befitting a band that have been recording for more than 30 years. But when Larry Cassidy (one of the band's founders) died back in February, it became something else: an epitaph, of sorts. If this is the last new album to emerge from the Section 25 camp they have ended on a real high because these new versions exorcise the spirits of the '80s and bring the band's music more in line with their live shows, which have been doing this kind of thing for a while now. It isn't all about adding a more modern sheen ― songs like "The Process" retain their acidy squelch, and they were never going to mess around too much with their best song, "From A Hilltop," which also receives a remix from New Order's Stephen Morris. Ultimately, Retrofit is the sound of a reinvigorated band still in love with making and playing music, something that was also apparent on last year's brand new Nature + Degree. It's just how Larry Cassidy would like to be remembered. (LTM)
