DFA1979's Sebastien Grainger Launches Record Label with American Lips Album

Death From Above 1979 skinsman Sebastien Grainger is taking his big, lanky body from behind the drum kit to a front-of-office gig, having just announced he's founded a new record label. The brand new imprint is called Ancient Fashion Records, and its first record will be from a Grainger-related project called American Lips.

Grainger confirmed his new business venture in an email to Exclaim!, revealing that he's co-running the label with onetime Tricky Woo member Adrian Popovich. The vinyl/digital imprint was co-founded "as a way of releasing our own stuff," though Grainger added that Ancient Fashion will also be game to put out "other things we're interested in."

An official release date is still TBD, but the first LP to be released through Ancient Fashion will be from American Lips, which features Popovich on guitar, his wife Jessica Bruzzese on bass and Grainger on drums. Their Kiss the Void is said to be a punky mix of "searing pop bullets and rock'n'roll rippers," with sonic touchstones including Wire, Devo, Jay Reatard, the B-52s and more.

Kiss the Void was recorded in Montreal by Popovich, while Grainger recently finished mixing the album in Los Angeles.

While the collection has yet to be mastered, you can get an idea of what to expect via a music video for its "Heat Wave." Featuring a jumble of clips pulled from Devo videos, old movies and CNN interviews, the Grainger-edited video can be seen down below.

The rest of the record, meanwhile, is expected to arrive sometime this fall.
