Get Up!

BY Noel DixPublished May 23, 2007

Picking up a mix by one of Canada’s premier turntablists is always going to be a smart purchase, but with Skratch Bastid’s tastes all over the map (ranging from classic rock to mainstream rap), you might not know what you’re in store for. This latest compilation is the DJ’s strongest to date, blending high tempos via quality disco and classic hip-hop with a few more current numbers, such as the ridiculously hot "Keep Bouncin” by Too Short, as well as soul sisters Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones winding things down. There are loads of nice moments, such as the nods to Maestro and Organised Rhyme, and everything is tightly mixed, with just enough tricks and drops to keep things interestingly smooth rather than bombarding with routine after routine. The song selection, party tempo and effortless means with which Skratch Bastid pulls everything together make this one of the best mixes of the year so far. (www.skratchbastid.com) Noel Dix
