Published Oct 16, 2014In addition to hitting the skins for Superchunk, Bob Mould, Mountain Goats and more, Jon Wurster is renowned as part of radio comedy duo Scharpling & Wurster with WFMU host Tom Scharpling. Between 2000 and 2013, the partnership provided listeners of their The Best Show with hours of comedic phone calls, and now the greatest bits are being preserved in a new box set through archivists the Numero Group.
Dubbed Scharpling & Wurster: The Best of the Best Show, the collection arrives March 17 as a hefty 16-CD package covering 75 "mind-bending, hilarious phone calls." A press release notes that the compilation encompasses a series of "bizarre tales" that built up the lore behind the fictional town of Newbridge, NJ. Scharpling would talk to a number of characters created by Wurster, including the Gorch, Timmy Von Trimble, Philly Boy Roy, Corey Harris and more.
In addition to the CDs, the box includes a USB stick containing all 75 calls, as well as four extra hours of material. Also included in the box are a map of Newbridge, paper-doll cutouts of certain characters and a 108-page hardcover book featuring an interview with Scharpling & Wurster, along with essays from Patton Oswalt, Fucked Up's Damian Abraham and more.
"Listen, I'm not going to sugar coat it; this is a 16-CD boxed set of phone calls. Almost everything about this is technologically redundant," Last Week Tonight host John Oliver said of the expansive set in a statement, adding, "However, I promise this is one of the funniest things you'll ever own. Scharpling and Wurster are the greatest."
Down below, you'll find a trailer for the box set that has Scharpling & Wurster detailing the project a bit more. They also smash apart the original phone that Wurster used to place his first call to his partner, with the remnants of the hammered-on item being used as premiums for pre-orders.
