Scar Culture

Inscribe

BY Greg PrattPublished Dec 1, 2001

Scar Culture's debut, Inscribe, is certainly heavy enough, as this album meets you behind the portables after school and kicks the shit out of you. Combining equal parts of NYC hardcore and Far Beyond Driven-style thrash extremity, the result is great, albeit for a short time only. After a while the bruising, bashing, bass-heavy quasi-death becomes one bullying block of pessimism. Still, I'm fence sitting here, because this is some talented stuff, dipping toes in a few genres and creating a sound rarely heard. If it's heavy stuff - pulverising bass overtones and extreme speed mixed with some fat grooves - that you're after, please check in with Scar Culture before perusing the nu metal troughs. As for me, maybe I'll wait around for an EP release and check in again.
