Saxsyndrum Go Pop on New Album 'Second Nature'

Montreal electro experimenters Saxsyndrum are best known for exactly what their name implies — blending sax, synth and drums — but on their latest album, Second Nature, they're leaning into a pop sound.

The idea for the record started back in 2015, after releasing SXD_EP, an album entirely composed of sax and percussion.

"It was a deep and fruitful exercise, but we had spent all this time listening to obscure sax samples, and experimental songwriting, that our ears and minds needed a break," the band tell Exclaim! "We began to yearn for sounds we were accustomed to hearing — sounds that were pervasive to the experience of listening to music — or at least popular music."

It started with samples from a cheap keyboard set on "Marimba," then grew as the group added vocalist AP Bergeron. Once pop-leaning foundations were laid, Saxsyndrum added flourishes of their signature experimental elements.

The resulting album is Second Nature. It's due out April 12 on So Sorry Records, but you can stream it right now down below.
