While his career-making characters Ali G, Bruno and Borat brought immeasurable notoriety to British actor Sasha Baron Cohen, all three franchises became less usable with more popularity. As such, fans have waited to see where Cohen could possibly take his career next. Now, a long-rumoured role has been confirmed, and Cohen will be taking on the role of fallen Queen singer Freddie Mercury in a new biopic.

While rumours that Cohen would play Mercury have been floating around for three years, MTV News have confirmed the news this week with one of Cohen's reps. The film does not yet have a title, but rights to the band's hits, including "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Another One Bites the Dust" among others, have been purchased. Filming is set to begin in 2011.

The Queen biopic was written by Peter Morgan, who previously worked on The Queen, The Last King of Scotland and Frost/Nixon. The Playlist reports that the film will focus on the band's early years, peaking with their 1985 Live Aid performance.
