Santogold & Diplo Top Ranking

Santogold & Diplo Top Ranking
He did it for M.I.A. before she became everyone's favourite pint-sized politico and now Diplo has made one of his mixtapes for M.I.A.-like Santogold.

Following the release of her widely acclaimed, Diplo-featuring, self-titled debut, which dropped back in April — and apparently still needs some time to make her the star everyone feels she truly is — Santi White gets the Diplo treatment via his Mad Decent label. Like M.I.A.'s 2004 breakthrough, Piracy Funds Terrorism, Top Ranking showcases Santogold's steeze and flexibility as an MC/singer.

Like with any mixtape of his, Diplo gets global and eclectic, mixing in all sorts to meet his booty-rumbling parties with what he subtitles "a Diplo Dub." Of course, Santi is on display here on the exhaustive 35-track mix (12 songs are hers), and is best mixed when her "Unstoppable" gels with Benga's "Night Dub." However, Dip's taste is almost what steals the show, throwing in some Warrior Queen (!), the Clash, Barrington Levy, Ratatat with Richie Spice, Aretha Franklin and some new wave classics like Devo and the B-52's for good measure, and with razor-sharp mixing precision.

Maybe this would have been wiser to release ahead of her album, to make a splash and build some buzz, like it did for M.I.A., but regardless of that oversight, this is a top-notch mixtape that will hopefully find its way up from the underground.
