Sandro Dominelli

The Alvo Sessions

BY Kerry DoolePublished Mar 1, 2010

Edmonton, AB-based jazz drummer/composer/bandleader Dominelli has received a Juno nomination and a Western Canadian Music Award for earlier releases Café Varze Jazz and Meet Me In The Alley, but remains worthy of wider recognition. Hopefully that will come via this excellent new offering. Recorded in NYC, it features a trio setting comprised of Dominelli, bassist Chris Tarry (Metalwood) and guitarist Rez Abbasi. Dominelli contributes three well-crafted originals and Tarry one. The album begins with a lyrical take on Keith Jarrett's "Personal Mountain," while a sweet, haunting cover of Chris Isaak hit "Wicked Game" is an album highlight. There's nothing fussy or showy about the ensemble's playing and, thankfully, no extraneous drum solos, while Dominelli's production is clean.
