After years of extensive touring here in Canada, Vancouver pop rockers Said the Whale embarked on a U.S. excision earlier in 2011. As we know, all didn't go smoothly for the group, as their gear was robbed in California. Now, we're going to get the full scoop on their time south of the Canadian border thanks to the new documentary Winning America.
Spearheaded by the CBC, the film's marketing slogan is "The Story of a Canadian Band. Trying to Make It in the States." In centres on the group's trip to SXSW this March.
A Facebook page describes the film like this: "This CBC Documentary follows Vancouver band Said the Whale to South by South West Festival (SxSW) in Austin, Texas. It's a true story about the hardships and successes of touring band trying to make it at the biggest music festival in North America."
The film was produced by Jon Siddall (CBC Radio 2) and Brent Hodge (CBC Radio 3) and directed by Hodge and Thomas Buchan (Battle of the Bagpipes, Hope).
You can watch a trailer below. As you will see, it features plenty of live performance clips, plus candid behind-the-scenes footage. The trailer also contains parts of that goofy video the band filmed when their trailer was broken into.
Winning America will premiere on CBC at 7 p.m. on July 23.
