Said the Whale Shed Light on Their 'Little Mountain' Follow-Up

Peppy Vancouver indie pop crew Said the Whale are excited to have recently received a Juno nomination for their 2012 offering Little Mountain, but the band already have their sights set on a follow-up LP.

"We're simultaneously trying to write the next one while being patted on the back for the last one," singer-guitarist Tyler Bancroft tells Exclaim! on the line from Banff, where a few of the members were involved in songwriting sessions. "That's a bad thing to let go to your head, so we're trying not to lose sight and just write."

Bancroft notes that the band have already recorded a new song called "Father," though he's unclear if the track will make the next set. It was, however, recorded in Washington with esteemed producer Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, the Walkmen, the Shins), and the experience left an impression on the West Coast act.

"He's the first big name we've ever worked with — I don't say this taking shots at anyone we've worked with in Vancouver — but having that sort of experience behind the board is both comforting and terrifying," Bancroft admits, adding that Ek told him tales in between takes about recording with the Shins.

Bancroft says that Said the Whale have at least four other songs in the can and have recording time booked in Vancouver this June.

"Hopefully in June we'll have a collection of 15 or so recorded and then we can choose the best," he explains.

An album title hasn't been decided upon, but the troupe hope to have it out this fall.
