Published Dec 16, 2014He's spent the last few years tearing up stages in Toronto as the guitarist in phonetically conscious punk band Pkew Pkew Pkew (gunshots), but Ryan James is set to embark on a slightly mellower, solo path.
Splitting his formative years between Hamilton and Detroit, James has always had a penchant for incorporating "the blue collar grit" of his hometowns into his solo music. Leaning in a much folkier direction than we're used to hearing from him, James' debut solo EP Prisoner apparently draws inspiration heavily from the greats like Ryan Adams and Steve Earle.
In anticipation of the forthcoming release, you can check out the clip for the EP's title track. Filmed with the help of Pkew Pkew Pkew (gunshots) friend and collaborator Jesse Powell, the video is a simple black and white affair, letting James, his acoustic guitar and cigarettes steal the spotlight.
The album will be made available digitally and on cassette, with an album release show scheduled for January 8 at the Central in Toronto. Watch the clip for "Prisoner" below.
