Published Sep 24, 2014Taking a break from his regular Slaughterhouse duties, Detroit rapper Royce da 5'9" has revealed he's put together a new project with iconic Gang Starr producer DJ Premier. Working under the title PRhyme, the pair apparently have a release on the way sometime in the near future.
A press release confirms that the twosome recently got together to make news tunes as PRhyme, with the project finding Premier using samples culled exclusively from the catalogue of composer Adrian Yonge (Black Dynamite, Twelve Reasons to Die).
"I've never sampled just one artist, I'm known for my reputation and my creativity," DJ Premier said in a statement. "I wanted it to be my traditional thing where I sample everything I find, but I am really proud how the project came out and Royce is one hell of a pusher."
While details on the tracklisting are forthcoming, the record reportedly features guest contributions from the likes of Jay Electronica, Common, Mac Miller, Ab-Soul, Killer Mike, Schoolboy Q, Dwele and Slaughterhouse.
The PRhyme partnership is highlighted in a new teaser video for the project, which finds a gang of crate diggers blessed with an in-store performance that finds Premier using a Black Dynamite-sampling beat to support Royce. The rapper goes on to spits a sermon like a "preacher at the pulpit," closing out the preview with a line about the project being for real hip-hop heads that would "never, ever, ever ask me am I here to replace Guru."
