Earlier this year, Winnipeg indie pop sextet Royal Canoe promised that their upcoming tour would see them playing new tunes that "may be destined for a not-so-distant-future release." It turns out the release in question is an album titled Something Got Lost Between Here and the Orbit, and it touches down September 16 through Nevado.
The band's new record is their first since 2013's Today We're Believers,and according to a press release, the outfit spent between-tour periods over the past two years crafting the 11-song album.
Co-produced between the band and Ben Allen (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Deerhunter), the new album apparently puts the focus on the band's vocal and percussive approaches, though it's further noted that Royal Canoe have "always had an intensively rhythmic heart." Thrown into the mix are the sounds of tapped water bottles, synths, homemade samples, beluga whale calls and more.
Lyrically, Something Got Lost Between Here and the Orbit apparently touches a mix of "emotional clarity" and uncertainty, and how "important relationships can shift, morph and drift." It's hinted that the band's back-and-forth of road life and downtime is partially responsible for this thematic direction.
