Roy Montgomery

324 E. 13th Street #7

BY Sean PalmerstonPublished Dec 1, 1999

Collecting most of his long out-of-print singles, 324 E. 13th Street #7 is something of a Roy Montgomery fan's wet dream. Taking music from as far back as 1985 and arranging it chronologically, the 20 tracks follow Montgomery's career from early contributions in his New Zealand-based group the Shallows, up to solo recordings from early 1995. The album’s title, Montgomery’s New York street address, is also the location where a great deal of these singles were recorded. Montgomery's work, for the most part, contains only guitar and vocals. It would be short-sighted to pass the man off as merely another drone guitar player. His songwriting skills are amazing, and although he may play solo primarily, his songs are as captivating as most full bands cold ever hope to be.
