Jazz-funk legend Roy Ayers has announced his first new album in nine years. The mallet master has teamed with A Tribe Called Quest's Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge for Roy Ayers JID002, set to arrive this Friday (June 19) through the duo's Jazz Is Dead.

Featuring eight new compositions, Roy Ayers JID002 is the first standalone release on Shaheed Muhammad and Younge's new label. The pair released a compilation featuring tracks with Ayers, Gary Bartz, Brian Jackson and more in March.

Recorded at Younge's Linear Labs studio in Los Angeles, the eight-track album is said to sound "both like an unearthed an unreleased album from Ayers' classic period in the 1970s as well as something startling, new and unexpected."

Joining Ayers, Younge and Shaheed Muhammad are drummer Greg Paul, vocalists Loren Oden, Joy Gilliam, Saudia Yasmein, Elgin Clark and Anitra Castleberry, as well as Phil Ranelin and Wendell Harrison of the legendary spiritual jazz label Tribe Records.
