Marie Fredriksson, best known as one half of Swedish pop duo Roxette, has passed away. She was 61.
The singer's management confirmed this morning that she had died following "a long illness." She battled cancer for 17 years.
Fredriksson was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2002, undergoing intense treatment that removed the tumour, but left her blind in one eye and with limited hearing, speaking and mobility abilities.
Born in Sweden, Fredriksson performed with punk band Strul and MaMas Barn, then found success in her home country as a solo artist in the early 1980s before forming Roxette with Per Gessle. Since 1986, they've released 10 studio albums, the most recent one, Good Karma, arriving in 2016.
The band was nominated for many international awards, including a Canadian Juno Award in 1992 for Best Selling Single by a Foreign Artist.
Fredriksson is survived by her husband Mikael Bolyos and their children Inez Josefin and Oscar.
