Ron Hawkins

"Till It Kills Ya" (video)

Lowest of the Low's Ron Hawkins released Garden Songs last year alongside the Do Good Assassins, then followed it up with a solo album christened Spit Sputter and Sparkle earlier this year. Now, the Toronto-based music man has offered up a new video from the latter release, and Exclaim! has your first look at it.

The track pays homage to the tragic rock'n'roll trajectory of Kurt Cobain's career, providing powerful commentary on the soul-destroying nature of fame.

"'Till It Kills Ya' is loosely based on Cobain's struggles with fame and his own personal demons, but applies to anyone who wears their life like an uncomfortable suit," Hawkins explains. "Sometimes the devil we know is a far cry worse than the devil we don't."

As for the video, it was shot "do it ourselves" style with his partner, 10-year-old daughter and a couple of friends. After some studio time at Toronto's Artspace and some follow-up work in iMovie, the result combines the imagery of the '90s grunge era with some spooky skeleton-inspired make-up and animations.
