'Rolling Stone' to Launch Its Own Daily Music Charts

BY Sarah MurphyPublished May 7, 2019

Rolling Stone is giving Billboard some competition by launching its very own music charts.

The long-running magazine will debut its own ranking system beginning on May 13, which will include the top 100 singles and top 200 albums in the United States. The Rolling Stone Charts will be updated daily, as opposed to Billboard's weekly updates.

Additionally, Rolling Stone will also unveil the Rolling Stone Artist 500 (for most streamed artists), the Rolling Stone Trending 25 (for the fastest-moving songs), and the Rolling Stone Breakthrough 25 (for artists entering the charts for the first time).

Rolling Stone claims that its calculations will be more transparent and reflective of streaming culture.

Jay Penske, CEO of Penske Media Corp. (which owns Rolling Stone), explained in a statement: "What's imperative and exciting about our new Rolling Stone Charts is that it will present a transparent, granular and real-time quantification to accurately reflect listeners' evolving interests and give insight into worldwide trends."

The Rolling Stone Charts will rely solely on data accumulated through Alpha Data (formerly BuzzAngle). The media company tracks daily sales, streams and airplay of songs, artists and albums.

The new charts arrive weeks after Lil Nas X's smash hit "Old Town Road" was controversially categorized by the Billboard charts as "rap" rather than "country." Following backlash, the publication claimed that the genre label "had nothing to do with the race of the artist."

Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" remix featuring Billy Ray Cyrus remains atop the Billboard Hot 100 for the second week in a row. Not even Taylor Swift's new single could knock it out of the top spot. "Old Town Road" also currently holds the record for the most weekly streams of all time.
