R.I.P. UNKLE

UNKLE members James Lavelle and Richard File have called it quits. The duo announced their split on the official UNKLE website, unkle.com, with a message that read:

"After 10 years as musical collaborators in UNKLE, James Lavelle and Richard File are going their separate ways - a decision that is mutual and amicable. Rich will be concentrating on his new band We Fell To Earth, who are currently in the studio working on their debut album."

UNKLE was founded in 1994 as a partnership between Mo’ Wax label owner/DJ James Lavelle and Tim Goldsworthy, who eventually left to start DFA with James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem). After a string of well-received singles, the project released its first album, Psyence Fiction, in 1998, with an impressive cast of collaborators that included DJ Shadow, Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft and Badly Drawn Boy, among others. A universal letdown, the album was followed by two more studio albums, including last year’s War Stories, which was recently followed up by More Stories, a compilation of B-sides, remixes and new tracks that was released January 15, 2008.

While File will continue to work with his band We Fell To Earth, it’s been revealed that Lavelle is currently in the studio with movie score vet Clint Mansell (ex-Pop Will Eat Itself) working on the latest film by Darren Aronofsky (π, The Fountain).
