David Bowie's Spiders from Mars bassist Trevor Bolder died yesterday (May 21) after battling pancreatic cancer.

In addition to playing on iconic Bowie albums Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Aladdin Sane, Bolder joined Uriah Heep in 1976, remaining a vital part of the band until his health began to fail earlier this year. He also played in Wishbone Ash, Cybernauts and the Rats.

"Trevor was a wonderful musician and a major inspiration for whichever band he was working with," said Bowie in a statement on his website. "But he was foremostly a tremendous guy, a great man."

Uriah Heep guitarist Mick Box also paid tribute to Bolder, saying: "Trevor was a World Class bass player, singer and songwriter, and more importantly a World Class friend. He will be sadly missed by family, friends and rock fans all over the world. We are all numb to the core."

Bolder had suffered from pancreatic cancer for the last four years, undergoing surgery earlier this year. He was 62.
