R.I.P. Marmoset's LonPaul Ellrich

BY Brock ThiessenPublished May 14, 2008

Producer, multi-instrumentalist and core Marmoset member LonPaul Ellrich has died. Ellrich, a longtime staple in the Bloomington, IN., music scene passed away last week on May 7. Funeral services will be held today (May 14) in Indianapolis. Along with his role in Marmoset, Ellrich worked with several Secretly Canadian artists, such as June Panic, Jorma Whitaker, the Panoply Academy and the Impossible Shapes.

A statement on the Secretly Canadian website reads: "Though most knew him as an amazingly subtle and musical drummer, [Ellrich] was very much a swiss army knife. He could sing, play guitar, break out a fucked up keyboard part, it didn't matter...his primary instrument was his sheer taste in music and unending — sometimes to a fault — need to realize what he was hearing in his brain. LonPaul, you're brutally honest, totally endearing, and always inspiring, we'll miss you."

An online tribute to Ellrich has been set up at MusicalFamilyTree.com, as well as a PayPal fund for his son, Rupert. A benefit concert is also already in the works, according to Ellrich’s tribute page.
