Edmonton's underground music scene is mourning after the death of one of its own. Dave Finkelman, who played guitar and trumpet in Energetic Action, was struck by a car and killed while crossing the city's Whyte Avenue on Monday (January 27) afternoon. He was in his mid-20s.

Finkelman, who also hosted a weekly radio show on CJSR called Big A, Little a, played what was to be his final show with the angular post-punk band the previous night at Oliver Hall. The same gig also marked the final performance of Edmonton's Wednesday Night Heroes, who were doing their farewell show.

Finkelman was hit while crossing the street at a marked crosswalk at 101st St. and Whyte, according to various local media reports. Police reports note that the car was turning left on to Whyte and struck Finkelman while he was legally crossing. He later died in hospital.

Police are still investigating the incident and are interviewing the young female driver who was behind the wheel, the Edmonton Sun reports. They are also looking into any possible video surveillance that my shed light on the accident.

Bouquets of flowers were tied to the lamp post where Finkelman was hit the day after the incident.

"You didn't need to know Dave well to appreciate what he brought to his music and community. Everything he did, he did for the people he shared it with," Ashleigh Brown, who did videography for the band, tells Exclaim!

An important part of the Edmonton music scene, Finkelman shared his love of music with everyone who crossed his path, according to those close to him.

"[Dave] was always on a quest for knowledge about music and liked finding challenging pieces and sharing them with others," Richard Liukko, a longtime friend of Finkelman, told the Edmonton Journal.

It's unclear whether Energetic Action, who played Sled Island last summer, will continue on without Finkleman. The band's most recent release was an EP entitled Becoming, which was recorded in 2011 by Disciples of Power guitarist Wes Sontag and released in June 2013.

The band have not yet released an official statement about Finkelman's tragic death.
