Ringo Deathstarr

Sparkler

BY Ian GormelyPublished Sep 13, 2011

Hot on the heels of the Austin shoegazers' debut comes Sparkler, a collection of limited editions singles and EPs dating back to 2007. Only available in Japan until now, this collection is far from a grab-bag of cast-offs and leftovers, offering a glimpse at just how fully formed the trio emerged ― this could easily be mistaken for a companion piece to the band's debut. The nine tracks continue to mine My Bloody Valentine and early Smashing Pumpkins for sonic inspiration. Like many shoegaze revival bands, the material runs the gamut from barnstormers like opener "Swirly" to blissed-out noise jams like "Your Town." But unlike their contemporaries, there's a sense of raucous playfulness to Ringo Deathstarr's music that sucks you into their swirling vortex of fuzz. It's best to just let go and enjoy.
