Published Aug 28, 2013Let's get this straight: Ontario outfit the Riderless don't write "songs." Their Bandcamp page describes the instrumental tracks that make up the newly released Sung High Mast as "semi-structural co-ordinations." If you're curious as to what that means, the whole thing is available for free.
These 11 cuts were tracked over two improv-heavy days at Cambridge, ON's House of Miracles studio with Andy Magoffin (Constantines, Great Lake Swimmers). The results range from feathery avant-folk to bubbly post-rock to vibe-heavy soundscapes with plenty of sonic experimentation. And yet, for all their strangeness, the Riderless never lose the familiar feel of a live band with fairly traditional instrumentation.
