Richard Swift's Cause of Death Confirmed

His family issued a statement revealing Swift's struggle with alcohol addiction

Last week, indie rock polymath Richard Swift passed away at the age of 41 following an unspecified "serious medical condition." Now, the musician's family has revealed that his cause of death was complications from alcohol addiction.

An announcement on Facebook — which is jointly credited to the Swift family, Secretly Canadian and Next Wave Management — explains that Swift's addiction to alcohol resulted in hepatitis and liver and kidney issues. He spent multiple stints in rehab, and he was recently moved to a hospice.

The statement confirms that Swift had been working on new music, which is due to be released later this year. Swift played in groups such as the Shins, the Arcs and the Black Keys. He was an acclaimed solo artist and producer.
