Published Jun 15, 2012Last year, Saidah Baba Talibah became the inaugural winner of the SoundClash Music Award, which celebrates up-and-coming Toronto talent and comes with a $5,000 prize. Now, the nominees for the 2013 instalment of the prize have been announced.
Hosted by Toronto's Harbourfront Centre, this year's festivities will stretch over a weekend from July 13 to 15. The shortlist contenders for the grand prize are: OPOPO, Rich Kidd, Chloe Charles, Progress and the Rebel Alliance, LAL and Gyles.
The weekend-long event will feature performances from all of the shortlisted acts, plus other appearances by Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou and Elzhi. A press release notes that SoundClash "recognizes artists who pit sounds, genres and cultures against each other, and perform diverse, contemporary and boundary-busting music," so expect the weekend to offer plenty of eclectic sounds.
In addition to the main prize of $5,000, there will also be runner-up prizes of $3,000 for second place and $2,000 for third. For attendees, the SoundClash Festival will be free.
