Retox

'YPLL' (documentary)

"You kind of have to ruin your life to be in a punk band," Retox singer Justin Pearson says up front in a new documentary promoting the band's upcoming Epitaph Records debut YPLL. It's a glum thought to kick off the film, but the rest of the doc has Pearson and the other members of the San Diego-based hardcore crew admitting the sacrifices are ultimately worth it.

The hour-long movie also features guests like the Melvins' Buzz Osborne, Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner and Dangerous Boys Club/Antioch Arrow singer Aaron Montaigne discussing the difficulty of dedicating your life to punk, from working lackluster part-time jobs to the gruelling aspects of life on the road sans fame and fortune.

Throughout the flick, we also get treated to live clips of Retox and sound samples of YPLL. According to Pearson, he's constantly grilled about his influences, but he's more than happy to have Retox defy people's expectations.

"I would rather try to fuck that up and have them not be able to explain it. I think that's great. I don't want to be like another band."

You can watch the YPLL documentary down below and grab the LP on May 28.
