R.E.M.'s Peter Buck Reportedly Planning Solo Album

Former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck has reportedly lined up his latest full-length endeavour, and no, it's not another album from his gimmicky band the Baseball Project. Rather, it's a solo LP -- the first of his career.

This news comes courtesy of R.E.M. hired hand Scott McCaughey, who is helping out with the album and also plays with Buck in the Baseball Project, the Minus 5, and Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3. McCaughey told Seattle's KIRO 97.3 [via Seattle Weekly] that the album will be pretty "out." Um, we're not totally sure what that means ("out-there," perhaps?), but whatever it is, it's bound to be a departure for the career sideman, since Buck might even sing on the album. He reportedly won't be taking the microphone during live shows, however.

There's no word as to when the record will be out or what it will be called, but apparently Buck is considering putting it out exclusively on vinyl with no MP3 download. If you've been meaning to get that stylus fixed, now might be the time.

This looks to be the first solo album to come from any of the R.E.M. members since their breakup last year.
