R.E.M. Reportedly Back in the Studio

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jul 8, 2011

It's only been a few months since R.E.M. released their 15th studio album, Collapse into Now, but we haven't heard much from the rock legends lately. The group aren't planning to tour in support of the album, so they've apparently busied themselves getting back into the studio.

The details are still vague, but online women's magazine xoJane [via Rolling Stone] has posted a series of cellphone messages from Michael Stipe. One of these is a quote from Hunter S. Thompson that appears with the caption: "Michael's phone: in the recording studio." Another picture is captioned "I love Athens, Georgia," so it seems that the band are currently working in their hometown.

As exciting as it is to hear that R.E.M. are back in the studio, you probably shouldn't count on them releasing a new album anytime soon, as the band tend to take their time when rolling out new material. They began working on Collapse into Now a full two years before it arrived in stores.

R.E.M. have completed their contract with Warner Bros., so it's anyone's guess as to who will be behind their next release. Stipe has a penchant for posting frequent studio updates, so don't be surprised if we hear more about the band's future plans soon.
