R.E.M. Finish Recording New Studio Album

In 2008, R.E.M. released the excellent Accelerate, winning back many of the fans who had lost faith in the band following a string a hit-or-miss albums that culminated in the lacklustre Around the Sun. Now, the legendary college rockers are looking to keep that positive momentum going, having recently wrapped up recording their 15th album.

According to a message posted on their official site [via Paste], "The band has completed the third phase of recording their next record at Hansa Studio in Berlin with Jacknife Lee [who produced Accelerate] and will now set about mixing it at some point this fall."

There's no information about the title or tracklist, but "all signs are pointing towards a Spring 2011 release."

It's still a few months before we're likely to hear anything from the album, so fans can tide themselves over with the band's new expanded reissue of 1985's Fables of Reconstruction, which came out this week.

What's more, Peter Buck's Tired Pony side-project with Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody just released an album, The Place We Ran From. It won't be out in North America until September, but European fans can purchase a copy now.
