Receiver

Receiver

BY I. KhiderPublished Jun 1, 2001

This album features seven improvised pieces comprised of drums, percussion, AM radio pitches (Stephen White), synthesiser (Martin Lacelle) and assorted fine hollering on one track (Julia McDonald). Because of the percussive accents on this album there is a free jazz feel that anchors you to the familiar while the synths and other sounds draw you out into tangents of abstraction. Sometimes creepy and chaotic, sometimes brooding yet intense, White and Lacelle embrace the unfamiliar like musical frontiersmen. Receiver has the qualities of European film where you have no clue what's going to happen next or, quite often, what's going on at the moment, yet you enjoy it anyway because it is free of formulaic constraints. Odd yet pleasant.
